Expand your view and never be the same – Highlands Farm Estate is the place to be. Set on top of the Drakensberg and overlooking both the magnificent valleys of KZN and the beautiful grasslands of the Free State.

The farm is situated 2km from the N3, adjacent to the small town of Van Reenen. It is easily accessible, yet far enough to experience peace and tranquillity. It is not too far from the major cities – 300 km from Johannesburg, 250 km from Durban and 350 km from Bloemfontein. Far enough to be remote, yet not more than a three hours drive. It allows you to get away more frequently.

The Natal side of the estate offers sizeable homestead plots or a cosy village community.

There are 39 freehold residential homestead plots, each measuring 4000 m2 (1 acre). These homestead plots are scattered along 4.5 km roads. Each plot has a view over unspoilt valleys, natural forests and mountainous grass plains – the sun unfolding dynamic colours throughout the day as it rolls over the mountains.  The space between the sites, the plains and valleys will be farmed with Nguni cattle and game.  With horse riders, some herding cattle, and game crossing the roads, you will experience country life at its best.

There are 44 limited mixed-use erven in the village, averaging 750 m2 in extent. Limited mixed use means that the land can be used for a dwelling house and/or an office, a home business eg, small bakery, B&B, tea garden, etc. The broad streets (“woonstrate”) are lined with huge oak trees, with children playing in the street, alongside buildings of old South African architecture – a laid back, small town feeling.  In the village there are lots of open space – an oak forest to picnic in, a well to gossip around, a barn for parties – sometimes for the youngsters, some times for those of age and other times for everybody together.  On the eastern side of the village there is a medical centre and on the west a boutique hotel.

Other amenities, situated in altitude 400 m below the village in the lower reaches of the Lost Valley, are the 6 tent tented camp (available for family camping in a somewhat more rugged style) and the cultural village (for experiencing live Zulu culture). The imizi (homestead) will consist of a circle of 6 isindlu (huts) and a bigger hut for the umnumzane, accommodating a total of 14 people.

Experience the high literally and figuratively… The village and view plots are 1700m above sea level. The highest point is on top of Swartberg – 2034m up in the blue skies and the valley is at 1280m.

All homeowners will enjoy a general right of access to the common land (800 ha) of Highlands Farm – fishing in the dams, ponds and streams, hiking on foot or horseback through indigenous yellowwood forests, exploring fossilised dinosaurs in the layers of mountain slopes will give you the outdoor adventure of your life.

Our community of people, with a self achieved lifestyle, like to partake in a variety of social events. You could join the historical society and explore the rich history of the farm and of the area.  Members of the botanical society could spend a lifetime in identifying all the flora species on the farm – most probably the widest biodiversity in our country. After a day of outdoor pursuits, an ale in the club or pub, reading at the fireplace, followed by an evening of wining and dining with friends and family is the sporting lifestyle of restrained elegance on Highlands Farm.

Your erf or homestead site will be freehold and serviced with potable water, sewerage disposal, electricity, solid waste disposal as well as roads. The services will meet the local municipality standards. These standards will be maintained by means of a levy.  All of this are in a secured environment.  A real sense of security will be developed by the total community.  On Highlands, we look after one another.
